WASHINGTON - U.S. officials were closely watching signs that North Korea's unpredictable dictator Kim Jong Il may be gravely ill after he failed to attend a military parade Tuesday marking the 60th anniversary of North Korea's founding.

U.S. intelligence sources told NBC News that there is "real reason to believe Kim Jong Il has suffered some physical setback. ... It's thought to be serious, perhaps a stroke." The sources added that there's apparently no indication that it is "life threatening."

One U.S. official said the North Korean government appeared to be in a deferral mode, putting off decisions and actions as if waiting for Kim to return to the public eye. "Their first reaction is to defer," the source said.
